Saint Joseph's has one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Westchester County. It is the Emergency Medical Control Hospital for the City of Yonkers and a paramedic training center. The department is staffed by a highly qualified and experienced team of physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses and nursing assistants, who respond to medical emergencies ranging from fractures to heart attacks. The Emergency Room includes a Fast Track system for evaluating and treating small emergencies quickly, Psychiatric treatment facilities and a dedicated asthma treatment area, as well as special protocols for chest pain and strokes. In 2003, the Emergency Room was significantly enlarged and renovated for patient care and comfort. A dedicated radiology suite was added to expedite diagnosis and treatment and help reduce waiting times.

Saint Joseph's has been a leader in providing a comprehensive renal dialysis for the treatment of kidney disease for the Yonkers community for more than 30 years. Currently Saint Joseph's offers dialysis for inpatients, nursing home patients and for patients at home on continuous peritoneal dialysis. Care is coordinated by Board Certified Nephrologists, who work in conjunction with each patient's primary physician, to monitor medication, dietary changes and dialysis schedules. The team includes renal nurses, dietitians and social workers to provide support for dialysis patients and their families. Saint Joseph's is a member of the End Stage Renal Disease Council of New York and the Regional Transplant Program of Greater New York.

Our Family Health Center is a modern, spacious, state-of-the-art facility for comprehensive primary care for all ages, including infants, children, adults and the elderly, as well as prenatal care. Care is provided by a doctor-nursing team, including Family Practice Attendings, Family Practice Residents, Nurse Practitioners, nurses, nursing assistants, a dietitian and social worker. With an emphasis on prevention and health education, the Center takes a whole family approach to health care. Saint Joseph’s maintains a 29-bed Inpatient Psychiatric Unit which provides a comprehensive treatment program for adults who need hospitalization. Admission to the unit can be voluntary or involuntary. More patients requiring inpatient psychiatric hospitalization are admitted through the Emergency Department which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for psychiatric evaluation. Patients are treated by a multi-disciplinary team of psychiatrists, social workers and nurses. Group and occupational therapies and medication are provided as appropriate.

Continuing Day Treatment is a structured day program for adults who have been discharged from an inpatient mental health facility, or for people with a history of mental illness who have not been hospitalized, but who can benefit from a broad range of treatment services in a structured environment. Clients are evaluated for medication and participate in medication education, as well as individual and group therapy, social skills and rehabilitation assessments provided.

Blended Case Management offers intensive and supportive case management for chronically mentally ill patients living in the community. Case managers assist clients with basic day-to-day needs, including housing, employment and food, as well as advocacy with area social welfare agencies. Services provided also include crisis intervention and linkages with community agencies. Eligible adults must have prior psychiatric hospitalization and reside in Yonkers.

At Saint Joseph’s Positive Directions, people learn the skills necessary to lead an alcohol/drug free lifestyle and to make positive decisions in their lives. The program offers day and evening rehabilitation programs, based on the “12-step disease model” approach to sobriety. Positive Directions also offers the Department of Motor Vehicles mandated DWI program. There is an evening “Spanish-speaking Track” available.

This program provides detoxification and methadone maintenance for patients involved in long term opiate abuse. Eligible patients must be 16 years or older, residents of Yonkers, and currently addicted to opiates. Saint Joseph’s outpatient Behavioral Health Center offers evaluation and treatment for persons 18 and over. Individual, family and group therapy and medication, where appropriate, are available. Patients are evaluated for admission by a team of psychiatrists and certified social workers.
