Diagnostic Testing

There are sophisticated tests to determine the nature of a gastrointestinal problem, whether surgery is indicated and to determine whether it is cancer-related or not. Many of these tests are conducted in the Endoscopy Suite of the Ambulatory Surgery Unit at Saint Joseph’s Medical Center, which offers various screening procedures of the digestive tract, described collectively as “endoscopies."

These include colonoscopy screening and utilize some of the most technologically advanced equipment available. This allows the Hospital’s highly-trained and skilled physicians to check the patient’s digestive tract for ulcers, tumors and other irregularities. While most procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, having them performed in a hospital setting provides additional reassurance to patients should any medical complications arise during or after the procedure.

General Colon and Rectal Surgery

Saint Joseph’s Medical Center offers state-of-the-art care in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders affecting the lower gastrointestinal tract, specifically the colon, rectum, and anus. These disorders include colon and rectal cancers, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular diseases, and functional problems such as rectal prolapse, fecal incontinence, anal fissures, and hemorrhoids.

Our colon and rectal surgical staff have developed a unique depth and breadth of experience, known for leading-edge medical, surgical, and after-care knowledge and techniques. Saint Joseph’s Medical Centers surgeons specialize in the minimal access approaches to general colon and rectal surgery using laparoscopic techniques. Laparoscopic surgery has a range of benefits, including decreased post-operative pain, shorter post-operative recovery time, and less noticeable scarring.
